Materials
- Scissors or knife
- Soldering iron
- Pliers
- New jack for the earphones
- Wire stripper
- Glue gun
Procedure
- This first one is optional: Strip the coating of the jack to know which colors belong to which holes in the jack. This is when you do not want to replace the jack but if you do, then just follow, then.
- You need to cut off the wire from the jack. If the wire is doubled, you will have to split them. Cut about two to three inches of the wire from it.
- After cutting the jack, make sure to strip at least two inches from the insulation from where the jack used to be so that you will be able to see where the red, blue, and gold wires are.
- After scraping the plastic off, you will see three colors of wires: red, blue, and two gold wires. Most often, the two gold wires are the ground wires. What you have to do is to group them together by tying the two gold and red and blue so that you will only have two set of wires.
- The next step is to tin the wires. To do that, you will have to plug your soldering iron, and you have to run it all over the wires so that it will be covered in a shiny coating. This shiny coating will help you to shoot each wire through the holes in the stereo plug with ease.
- Now, you will have to solder the wires into the jack: Remember the first step in this tutorial? The optional one? This is where it comes handy; it allows you to be knowledgeable on where to put what.
- Ground wires (Gold) – tallest post on the jack
- Red and blue wires – the next two posts are usually one the side which is near the jack and one on the farthest end on the jack. The red wire usually goes to the post farthest while the blue is on the post near the jack (depends on the earphones).
- After properly soldering the wires unto the jack, test it out first if it is working properly, if it does, use glue gun to cover the internals of the jack.
- You now have repaired your earphones; well done.
Now that you have added a bit of information into your arsenal, you are now more knowledgeable on how earphones work so be careful in using it. Do not be afraid of opening things, you’ll never know – maybe this one can turn you into someone who can repair stuff without difficulties. Stay tuned for more tutorials like this.
